Ice tea is the perfect solution to quench your thirst, or serves as a cool, refreshing drink to offer your guests. Iced tea is served as a glass of cold tea, topped with ice. You can brew any type of tea and then chill this in the refrigerator, or buy a readymade can of frozen tea. It is advisable to cool the ice tea at room temperature before refrigerating it. This prevents the formation of condensates which give the tea a cloudy appearance and a chalky taste.
Iced tea is usually available as sweetened or unsweetened. While the sweetened iced tea contains granulated or cane sugar, the unsweetened iced tea is free from sugar, added flavors, and calories.
History of ice tea
Before the mid-1800’s, iced tea was referred to as tea punch and was usually topped with alcohol. Iced tea was popularized and commercialized in 1904 in the St. Louis World’s fair. Exhibitors from all over the world brought their products to this fair. One such exhibitor was Richard Blechynden, a tea plantation owner. His original plan of giving free samples of hot tea to visitors flopped when a heat wave hit the fair. Luckily, his eyes fell upon huge crates of ice and he served the brewed tea topped with ice. It was an instant success.
